Movember

Movember

Movember is here and it’s time to get ready for a crazy month of fun events, men’s health awareness, and oh yeah, epic mustaches! Going strong for 20 years, we are happy to see the Movember movement celebrate two decades of helping raise awareness for men’s health, both physical and mental. In today’s blog we’re going to cover what Movember is all about and how you can participate. Let’s grow on, shall we?

Men’s Health Matters

Let’s face it. There aren’t a lot of parades, marathons, telethons, or other events dedicated to men’s health issues. Movember is a chance to help bring much needed awareness and support for men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and other health issues that men face every year. Participating in Movember and even donating to different cancer charities and research centers can go a long way to bringing much needed cures and treatments to men all around the country suffering from these terrible diseases. Since its inception in 2003, the Movember organization has funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects, transforming the way health services reach and support men around the world.

Mental Health Awareness

Men’s mental health is a huge yet largely silent epidemic in this country. Did you know that roughly 80% of all people who commit suicide are men? In 2021 alone, of the 48,000 people who died of suicide in the US, 38,000 of them were men, according to the CDC. This Movember, you can help to raise awareness for men’s mental health and suicide prevention. You can do this in a few ways.

  • Grow a mustache or facial hair for Movember and talk to people about why you are doing it to help spread the word
  • Challenge friends and family members to participate with you as a team
  • Donate to Movember or to other men’s mental health initiatives
  • Share statistics on social media and use those spaces for discussions and reaching out to men who may need help but are afraid to ask
  • Participate in the “Move for Movember” activity to get yourself and other loved ones up and moving for 60 miles this Movember in order to raise awareness of the 60 men lost every hour around the world to suicide. Full details and guidelines here.
